Frequently Asked Questions
Where do games take place?
All games take place at the North London Athletic Fields, located at 1225 Adelaide St N. ⚠️ The park is a busy place in the summer and parking can be tight, so arrive early where you can. Better yet: Ride your bike! The bike path goes directly to the courts from multiple directions, and can double as your warmup 😎.
How many players can I have on my roster?
We get that summer is full of vacations and other fun things! There’s no limit to the number of people on your team’s roster (only 4 playing at a time), but to be playoff eligible, players must have played at least twice with your team during the regular season.
What happens in inclement weather?
The reality about beach volleyball in Canada in that sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate. Keeping you safe is our priority. We will play in rain, wind, but never in lightning. The quickest way for us to communicate about weather is through Instagram, so be sure that at least one player from your team is following @citysandbeach. There are no official makeup days for cancelled games, but we do work really hard at trying to find extra time for games where we can.
Are there referees or scorekeepers?
Nope. Teams will score and ref their own games. Scores are recorded on the scoresheet that’s waiting on your court each night. On opening night, we’ll call teams in to do a quick rule overview, and more info about expecations for things like hands, hard driven balls, tips etc. can be found on the Gameplay Rules Page.
Can I join as a solo player?
Leagues are all 4s, and teams must sign up as a team of at least 4 players. There is no option to sign up individually. We can offer some support in connecting solo players with eachother, but cannot guarantee a team for any player reaching out as an individual player. Posting in/checking out the London Volleyball Updates FB page is a great way to connect with other potential players looking for a team.
How many pools? And how many players in each pool?
We don’t know yet! All of this is entirely dependant on registration numbers and on and skill level across the leaue. You’ll have the option to tell us about your team’s experience and skill when you register, and as numbers float in, we’ll get a clearer idea of it will shape pool play.
Do I need to bring my own equipment? Anything I should bring?
We’ve got you covered for all the equipment, but it’s a good idea to bring water, shades, sunscreen, and to dress in layers. Also bring your biggest fans! And have those fans bring a chair to cheer from 😎.
Where do I find game times and standings?
You’ll find all of this on the website, once the summer gets rolling. Game times, court assignments, and match-ups are announced in 3 week blocks, so you’ll be able to plan ahead.
What if my team can’t make it to our games on a given night?
Things happen, we get it. Please give us as much heads up as possible if your team cannot make your games! It’s no fun for teams to wait around for an opponent to simply not show. In the case of your team not showing, the win will go to your opponent.
And, who the heck are you guys?
Oh hey. Sarah + Dave Cousins here. Dave’s been around beach volleyball his entire life: playing some pro events in the 90s, coaching thousands of athletes over 20s years with his youth program through the BVA, and is a master of all things beach court facility. And I’m Sarah. I didn’t play much before meeting Dave (at Spikes, of course), but my life is now intertwined with the sport, too. Our summers are beach volleyball. Dave’s your guy for all things sand/rules related, and I’m here behind the inbox to help you with the logistical/communication side of things.
